The Gijzenrooische Zegge is a small conservation area between the town of Eindhoven and the small town of Geldrop, where I live. From my home I am there within ten minutes walking. The center is an almost impenetrable marsh with alders, willow trees, and birches. This part was so marshy that people never managed to bring it into cultivation. It is surrounded by arable fields with a long history of fertilization by heather sods and sheep dung. Due to this, their levels are raised above the paths that cross them. Now they are cultivated with old races of corn and an important role is given to the old fashioned weeds of corn fields such as poppies and cornflowers. Part of the planted crops consist of plants producing oil rich seeds for the groups of small birds of passage in autumn, winter and spring. Besides by paths these fields are separated by ditches, rows of trees, and walls of wood.
